St. Moses Children’s Care Centre & Community Development has grown steadily since its founding in the 1970s. From grassroots child care to community empowerment and infrastructure development, our projects are at the heart of our mission to transform lives.
📜 Historical Timeline of Key Projects & Achievements
1974 – Foundation Year
- Founded by Ms. Jane Babirye.
- Supported by German volunteer Mrs. Gaby Lubyayi.
1978–1980
- Relief assistance during and after Idi Amin regime.
- Support from Salem Brotherhood Germany.
1981–1983
- Partnership with Evangelistic Enterprises and Kindernothilfe (KNH).
- Construction of prefabricated houses in Njeru.
- Centre officially opened in December 1983.
- Death of founder Mama Jane Babirye.
1984–1990
- Construction of 4 classes of St. Moses Primary School.
- Mrs. Gaby Lubyayi takes over Centre administration.
- Planning of family housing units begins.
1993–1996
- Health Centre built and improved over time.
- Six family units constructed for up to 14 children each.
- Visit and official opening by German Minister Carl-Dieter Spranger.
2002–2006
- Orphan support by SidEcole (Switzerland).
- Boarding school buildings constructed (2003).
- Kindernothilfe begins gradual withdrawal by 2010.
- Renovation of family houses.
2007–2009
- Borehole sunk in Kufu village.
- Land acquired for agriculture.
- Microcredit and piggery programs launched.
2010–2014
- Office extension, pickup vehicle, cowshed construction.
- Solar systems installed, greenhouses built.
- Rabbit rearing, chicken house restoration.
- Playground constructed.
2015–2019
- Sweater knitting machines introduced.
- Orange orchard planted.
- Centre’s road tarmacked and website development started.
- Guest houses and library renovated.
2020–2022
- Food and hygiene supplies during COVID-19.
- Solar system repaired.
- Eucalyptus trees (5,000) planted.
- Thorn hedge planted for Centre security.
2023–2024
- Youth Program launched.
- Website, Facebook reactivated, Instagram formed.
- Buildings repainted, fumigated, and security lights repaired.
💡 Current Projects & Initiatives
1. 🧶 Weaving Workshop
- Produces sweaters and garments.
- Used for both Centre children and income generation.
- Run by staff with volunteer assistance.
- Sales take place at St. Moses Primary School.
2. 🏫 Boarding Section
- Accommodates P6 and P7 children during school term.
- Offers care: education, clothing, medication, food, and shelter.
- Supported by donations and sponsorships.
3. 🏡 Guest Houses
- Serve as accommodation for volunteers and visitors.
- Renovated in 2019 and 2020.
- Also serve as a modest income source for the Centre.
4. 🐄 Cattle Project
- Cowsheds constructed in 2011.
- Provides milk and nutrition.
- Also contributes to sustainability of the Centre.
5. 🐖 Piggery
- Constructed with support from Omoana.
- Offers training, nutrition, and revenue.
6. 🥬 Greenhouse Vegetable Growing
- Initiated in 2013 with support from Nouvelle Planete.
- Grows vegetables for Centre consumption and sale.
- Supports the kitchen vegetable garden.
7. 🌳 Orchard
- Orange orchard with over 100 trees (started in 2015).
- Supports Centre’s diet and sustainability efforts.
8. 🚰 Water Harvesting System
- 50,000-liter water tank installed in 2018.
- Reduces utility costs and ensures water availability.
9. 🪣 Waste Management
- Rubbish sorted into 5 categories: organic, glass, metal, plastic bottles, and others.
- Separation introduced by volunteers to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
10. 🧑🔬 Solar & Energy Projects
- Solar energy system installed in 2013 and upgraded in 2016.
- Used to reduce electricity bills and support lighting and refrigeration.
- Security lights repaired in 2024.
🛠️ Project Implementation Strategy
As of 2018, following a Government directive, St. Moses CCC transitioned from institutional child care to community-based programs. Support and development projects now extend more widely to:
- Children in their homes and schools
- Families through Micro Credit
- Youth empowerment activities
- Women’s economic development
- Infrastructure for sustainability
